Control of language is a neglected strategic battlefront of the political battles of our time. Who controls language controls thought.
I don't think it's a coincidence that the most regressive factions insist they're the real "liberals" without mentioning that they're using a centuries old definition.
In parallel, one of the hallmarks of right-wing thinking is psychological projection. It is common to accuse the opposition of the worst and most extreme of one's own impulses and behavior. "Liberal intolerance" is only one example.

"Progressive" is a response to the debasement of "liberal". Other words like "socialist" have been so debased that there is inadequate vocabulary to refute the drumbeat of "there is no alternative." (The most successful Big Lie of the Twentieth Century is that Bolshevism "is" socialism.)
