15 Questions for Lovers of Fantasy Fiction

1. What was the first fantasy series you read from start to finish?
The Fionavar Tapestry by Guy Gavriel Kay. It seems strange to me that I read that before The Belgariad by David Eddings but I believe I did. I also read the whole Narnia series but I don't think I read it straight through the first time. Not sure.

2. Who is your favorite character in the world of fantasy?
The first one that comes to mind is Harry (Angharad; Harimad-sol) from The Blue Sword by Robin McKinley.

3. Have you ever been embarrassed by a certain author or book?
Piers Anthony got pretty embarrassing after a while. I liked the first few Xanth Novels, and the original Blue Adept series, and the first few of the Immortals series, and then I tried to read the Bio of a Space Tyrant and I couldn't even finish it.

4. Favorite fantasy book?
I go back and re-read The Forgotten Beasts of Eld by Patricia McKillip and The Blue Sword, and Dragonslayer by Barbara Hambly on a fairly regular basis. Those are my favorites. And all about powerful, smart women who don't quite fit right into their native society. Fancy that.

5. Best recent author find?
I was pretty blown away by Brian Francis Slattery's Liberation: Being the Adventures of the Slick Six After the Collapse of the United States of America, which is a fantasy-sf exploration of how the land and the ghosts get involved post the economic collapse of America. I also really enjoyed Acacia by Daniel Anthony Durham and Brown Girl in the Ring by Nalo Hopkinson.

6. What book do you most want to see made into a movie?
The Forgotten Beasts of Eld would actually make a pretty awesome movie. Small central cast, gorgeous creatures. Evil wizard. I totally think it could go over really well.

7. What series do you tell people to stay away from?
I can't really think of a fantasy series I tend to warn people off of, but then I don't tend to follow series that are still coming out. I usually wait for them to finish and then read them.

8. What was your favorite fantasy series in junior high school?
I think we were working through Dragonlance when I was in junior high. Hard to date book reading.

9. Favorite fantasy movie?
Probably The Princess Bride.

10. Worst fantasy movie?
Don't even want to go there.

11. Fantasy series everyone should read?
I generally feel pretty comfortable recommending The Belgariad to everyone. I'm also really fond of the first few books of Brust's Taltos series.

12. How many times have you read your favorite fantasy novel?
I really don't know. somewhere btween 5 and ten times I guess.

13. Series you are currently waiting to finish?
hmm. As I mentioned before I don't really wait for series to come out. So although I'm in the middle of a few I wouldn't say I'm actively waiting.

14. What fantasy book are you currently reading (or what is the last one you read)?
Green, by Jay Lake.

15. Hardcover or paperback?
I used to have a powerful preference for paperback books. Lately I'm reading more new books as they come out, so I've gotten used to hardcover. I guess I still prefer paperback though.
