How do you define Wisdom?

This is the topic of a new $2 million research program sponsored by the Arete Initiative at the University of Chicago called Defining Wisdom. They are offering up to 20 research grants to scholars who have received their Ph.D.s within the last ten years ('cause those are all the smart people, dontcha know), for scholarly and scientific approaches to empirically defining wisdom.

Letters of intent to apply must be received by November 19. Go to the website or write to wisdom@uchicago.edu for more information.

(I'm not applying, no. I don't have a Ph.D. But I thought some of my readers might qualify or know people who do. Anyway, it's interesting. So pass the word.)

Practical Wisdom thoughts

Hmmm . . .interesting.

My first thought when reading this was . . ."I am very lucky to have dear friends whose wisdom I treasure."

And my second thought was, when you match wisdom with empathy, that is priceless.

One of those who has this combination is my boyfriend Jim. I've learned to value this very highly in someone I love and spend a lot of time around. *rueful look*

(And after that bit of introspection, back to work I go . . .)

One the one hand...

...I find this interesting. On the other hand, I'm vaguely offended that they think only PhDs are qualified to define it, particularly the implication that only young PhDs need apply. I mean, any gamer can tell you that a high INT often means a low WIS!

On the other hand, I think I'll just sit back and watch them produce yet another piece of research that will be snapped up by the self-help gurus, and largely ignored by the majority of the population.

Apparently today is my bitchy cynic day!

Re: One the one hand...

Naaa, I happen to agree with you here. I mean I'm a supreme example of that statement... my INT is off the charts but my wisdom is somewhere below a rock.
