From the red cross website on the S. California fires:
October 23, 2007—At least three new fires are burning today, forcing thousands more people to flee their homes and prompting local and state officials to close schools and ask residents to stay off roads and highways. Roughly 1,200 homes and businesses have been consumed by flames thus far, as have more than 400 square miles of land. Winds have gusted above 90 miles per hour in some locations, and weather forecasters are calling for the high winds to continue today before subsiding on Wednesday and Thursday.
Thousands of Red Cross volunteers are en route to Southern California to help local chapters respond to the devastating wildfires. Also en route are supplies, including cots, blankets, meals, comfort kits, and mobile feeding trucks. The Red Cross opened 11 shelters Monday night, housing more than 3,000 people. The Red Cross is also distributing water and food to firefighters and emergency workers.
