There are a number of online markets that are accepted for membership. As well, prospective members can apply to the Membership Committee and wait on a decision, depending on where the market stands. Or, you can find the email address of the regional director for where you live and write a query. I'll note that even during my period off the BoD I received emails from people about this very thing and helped at least one cut through the mess and become a member.

Well, the problem is what I do isn't a market, precisely. :) I work for a gaming studio out of Europe on a game called Perplex City; written well over a quarter of a million words for the game in the last two years, and much of it world-building (ex. see http://www.pxcsentinel.com ). Maybe I'll write a query just to see where it goes. I don't think I'd win my case, though, because the organization isn't really intended to support people like me who are active SF writers, but not in the agent-contract-editor-distribution game.
