Weekly reading post

What I just read: The Summer Prince, by Alaya Dawn Johnson
I actually finished this a while ago, but I haven't finished any other books since, unless you count the ebook of the most recent segment of The Human Division, by John Scalzi. (I find I am rather enjoying the episodic nature of those, btw. And also the fact that they are released on Tuesdays. I read a bunch of webcomics. Some are daily, some are Tue, Thur, or Tue, Fri, or whatever, but at least half are MWF. That leaves Tuesdays and Thursdays a little spare. nice to have this to add to them.

To get back to The Summer Prince, though, I loved it. Exactly what YA can be. Recommended to everyone. Or at least everyone 13 and up, say.

What I'm reading now:

White Teeth, by Zadie Smith. About race, immigration, and assimilation in the UK. Interesting. Not the sort of thing I usually read, but I'm enjoying it.

The Warrior's Apprentice, by Lois McMaster Bujold - continuing the Vorkosigan Saga. I'd never read these before my friend Erika gave me the two-novel compilation Cordelia's Honor. Erika loaned me this one, to keep me going, and it's similarly very engaging.

47, by Walter Mosley. Mosley is best known for his crime fiction, but he's written a variety of SF titles, and this is one of them. So far it's set in the time of slavery; the first-person narrator reports on how he met a galactic traveler. Very interesting and engaging. I read a couple other things by Mosley in the past while, and I intend to read all his science fiction.

This is my first try at "checking out" a kindle ebook from the library. So far so good.

What I'll probably read next: Rachel Swirsky's Short Story Recommendations from 2012, her 2012 Novelette Recommendations, and her Novella Recommendations

I didn't read a lot of short fiction last year, so as usual I'm scanning reviews and recommended lists, since I'm a member of the worldcon and can nominate for the Hugo Awards.

Nominations for the Hugo Awards are due by March 10. I've also recently stopped by two comics shops and asked the shop owners for recommendations, so once I've looked those over I'm hoping to post on the Best Graphic Story category.

If you have recommendations, I would love to hear them as well. (in any category, really)
