Brian and Anne

post-op progress report

okay, this is me typing this time. Last night Bill typed for me. Today I can type because I have full use of my right hand back. I started to be able to move it late last night and today I can fully feel it and move it.

As for my arm, I'm only moving that to the front of me and keeping my elbow pretty close to my body. But it feels pretty good. just about exactly what the doctor lead me to expect, so that's nice.

If anyone has a trick for getting tons of dried iodine off the skin, please let me know. We took my dressing off this morning and replaced it with three band-aids as per the doctor's orders. My shoulder looks kind of like it got attacked on amateur tattoo night(both iodine and lots of purple marker). Each small incision has one or two stitches in it, not bad.

It was both pleasing and amusing to note that multiple people sign off on which arm is to be operated on, and they each have to initial their mark on the arm itself. Near my right elbow is the first such, where the nurse asked me which arm they were operating on and indicated it there. Reassuring to have that done while I was still awake.

They put a breathing tube down my neck since they put me deep under, and the resultant sore throat and occassional coughing is a side-effect I hadn't anticipated. But it's not bad and the painkiller they put me on, Hydrocodone, is also a tussin, so it should be helping control the cough.

I'm doing lots of napping under the beautiful blanket Caro knitted me, but also trying to move around some.

Penn and Teller's Bullshit series, which I rented, is good but reminds me of Farenheight 9/11 in that I suspect the people who most need to see it never will. I did appreciate the episode about bottled water - it gave me the idea to give my co-worker a blind taste test to see if she can really tell the difference between tap water and bottled water. She insists she can, and spends a ton of money on bottled water, despite the fact that she's living in impoverished circumstances. it just blows my mind.

As you can tell, I'm making productive use of my time off work. :P
